Choose K'NEX if you want a tall, open model that moves, such as a Ferris wheel or a roller coaster. Choose Lego Technic if you want a compact vehicle with its steering, tipping or drive packed inside the body. The two systems join their parts in different ways and are not designed to connect.
Pick the K'NEX 3-in-1 Classic Amusement Park 17035 for a big motorised fairground ride, the Amazin' 8 Coaster 80216 for builders from age 7, the 80 Model Building Set 15269 for many builds without batteries, Lego Technic Tipping Dump Truck 42203 for hand-operated mechanisms and the Lamborghini Revuelto 42214 for app control.
K'NEX vs Lego Technic: the five sets at a glance
| Set | Pieces | Age | Finished size | Motor and batteries | Models per box |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| K'NEX 3-in-1 Classic Amusement Park 17035 | 744 | 9+ | Ferris wheel over 78 cm (31 in.) tall | Motor included; 2 x AA needed, not included | 3 rides (1 in the booklet, 2 online) |
| K'NEX Amazin' 8 Coaster 80216 | 448 | 7+ | About 80 cm (2.6 ft) tall | Motorised chain lift; 2 x AA needed, not included | 1 coaster |
| K'NEX 80 Model Building Set 15269 | 408 | 8+ | Not stated | No motor, no batteries | 80 (66 in the printed booklet) |
| Lego Technic Tipping Dump Truck 42203 | 462 | 9+ | Over 14 cm high, 28 cm long, 11 cm wide | None; hand-operated | 1 |
| Lego Technic Lamborghini Revuelto 42214 | 1,135 | 10+ | Over 9 cm high, 40 cm long, 17 cm wide | Hub and rechargeable battery included; app control | 1 |
Sizes describe the finished model, not the box. Basic Fun, the company behind K'NEX, publishes heights for its two rides but no footprints, so their width and depth are not stated here.
Rods and connectors vs beams, pins and axles
K'NEX is a rod-and-connector system. Rods click into slots on the connectors, and the frame stays open, so towers, wheels and track supports remain visible in the finished model. That suits fairground rides and coasters, where the structure is part of the show. In the multi-model boxes, most models are built one at a time from the same pieces.
Lego Technic joins beams with pins and axles that pass through their holes, and gears transfer movement between axles. The mechanism usually sits inside a vehicle body, so the finished model is compact and closed. About nine in ten of the dump truck's 462 pieces are beams or connectors such as pins and axles.
The two systems are not designed to fit together. Neither Basic Fun nor Lego claims compatibility or offers an adapter, so plan them as separate collections. Within K'NEX, Basic Fun says the parts of the 80 Model set work with other K'NEX sets. Kid K'NEX and K'NEX Education are separate ranges and are not covered here.
K'NEX picks: two motorised rides and an 80-model box
Both rides come from the K'NEX Thrill Rides line and include a battery motor. The third box trades movement for variety: many more models, but no motor and no batteries.
K'NEX 3-in-1 Classic Amusement Park 17035: three motorised rides in one box
- 744 pieces in the classic K'NEX scale, recommended for ages 9+ (some boxes print 7+)
- Ferris wheel over 78 cm (31 in.) tall when finished
- Battery motor included; two AA batteries needed, not included
- Three rides: Ferris wheel in the printed booklet, boom ride and swing ride as online instructions

This is the box for a fairground fan. The same 744 pieces build a Ferris wheel, a boom ride or a swing ride, and the included motor drives whichever one you choose. Finished, the Ferris wheel stands over 78 cm tall, while the Technic truck is over 14 cm high.
The box leaves out two things. The motor needs two AA batteries, and only the Ferris wheel has a printed booklet. Basic Fun publishes the boom ride and swing ride as online instructions under code 17035, so keep a tablet or printer handy for those builds.
Choose it for a builder aged nine or older who prefers rides to vehicles. The Technic dump truck carries the same 9+ mark but builds one compact truck that you steer and tip by hand. The amusement park gives you height and a motor; the truck gives you mechanisms tucked inside a vehicle body.
K'NEX Amazin' 8 Coaster 80216: a motorised coaster from age 7
- 448 pieces, recommended for ages 7+
- About 80 cm (2.6 ft) tall when finished
- Motorised chain lift; two AA batteries needed, not included
- One coaster with car and track, a printed booklet and a storage tub
The Amazin' 8 carries the lowest age mark in this comparison, two years below the Technic truck. A motorised chain lift sends the coaster car through the track, so a seven-year-old gets a moving model that runs on two AA batteries.
You get one model; the booklet shows no alternate designs. Basic Fun advises placing the finished coaster on a flat, hard surface so it does not tip over. The storage tub keeps the pieces together once the coaster comes apart.
Choose it for a seven- or eight-year-old who wants movement more than variety. Compared with the dump truck, its chain lift runs on motor power, but there is no steering or tipping to work by hand.
K'NEX 80 Model Building Set 15269: 80 small builds, no batteries
- 408 classic and micro rods and connectors, recommended for ages 8+
- 80 models: 66 in the printed booklet, more building ideas online
- No motor and no batteries
- Re-sealable storage bag
- Basic Fun says all parts work with other K'NEX sets

This is the variety box. Instead of one large ride, it offers 80 smaller models, and most are built one at a time from the same 408 pieces. Nothing needs batteries, so it suits a child who likes to finish a model, take it apart and start the next one.
Expect to use a screen as well as the booklet. Basic Fun counts 80 builds, but the printed booklet indexes 66 and sends you online for more ideas with code 12469, not the box number. The booklet calls the set the 80 Model Deluxe Building Set, and shop listings often use the Deluxe name too.
Pick it as a first K'NEX box or as extra parts for the rides, since Basic Fun says its pieces work with other K'NEX sets. Against the Technic truck, you get 80 models instead of one from a similar number of pieces. The truck, in turn, builds a single vehicle with working steering and tipping.
Lego Technic picks: a hand-operated truck and an app-controlled car
Both Technic sets build one vehicle with its mechanisms inside the body. The dump truck works entirely by hand. You steer and drive the Lamborghini, and switch its lights, from a phone or tablet.
Lego Technic Tipping Dump Truck 42203: steering and tipping by hand
- Pieces: 462
- Age: 9 and up
- Hand-operated steering and tipping body
The dump truck shows the Technic approach at a modest size. You steer it into position by hand, tip the body with a knob on the side, and open the cab doors. The finished truck is over 14 cm tall, 28 cm long and 11 cm wide, so it fits on a desk or shelf.
There is no motor, battery or other electric part, and the box builds one model. The Lego Builder app adds 3D building instructions. Choose it for a builder aged nine or older who wants to operate the steering and tipping by hand and see how the mechanisms work.
It shares its 9+ mark with the K'NEX amusement park, but it stays compact and nothing moves on its own. As of October 2026, Lego lists the truck as retiring soon.
Lego Technic Lamborghini Revuelto 42214: steering and driving by app
- Pieces: 1,135
- Age: 10 and up
- CONTROL+ app: steering, driving and lights
The Lamborghini is the powered Technic option in this comparison. In the CONTROL+ app you steer it, drive it forwards and backwards, control the lights and follow live data on the app's cockpit screen. The hub and a rechargeable battery are in the box, and the headlights include glow-in-the-dark elements.
With 1,135 pieces and a 10+ mark, it is the largest set here by piece count. The finished car is over 9 cm high, 40 cm long and 17 cm wide, so give it some floor space to drive.
Check two things before you buy it, especially as a gift. The USB-C cable for the battery is not included. The app also needs a compatible phone or tablet: Bluetooth 4.1 or later, plus Android 6 or later (12 or later recommended) or iOS 12 or later. For other app-driven models, see our guide to remote-controlled Lego Technic sets.
Motors, batteries and apps compared
Power splits these five sets more clearly than piece count does. Here is what you need to have ready for each one:
- Classic Amusement Park 17035 and Amazin' 8 Coaster 80216: two AA (LR6) batteries for the included K'NEX motor.
- 80 Model set 15269: nothing extra, because there is no motor.
- Tipping Dump Truck 42203: nothing extra, because every function works by hand.
- Lamborghini Revuelto 42214: a USB-C cable to charge the included battery, plus a compatible phone or tablet with the CONTROL+ app.
K'NEX keeps power simple: each ride box has one battery motor that runs on two AA batteries. The motor is part of the K'NEX system, and neither maker offers a way to connect it to Technic parts.
Technic offers two routes here. The dump truck has no electric parts and no instructions for adding motors. The Lamborghini brings its own hub and rechargeable battery. In this comparison, the Technic truck is hand-operated, and powered Technic means an app-controlled car.
You can motorise the truck yourself, but it becomes your own project. The Technic Hub 88012 is a separate Lego product; it needs six AA batteries, not included, and motors are extra. You would also have to work out where the hub and motors fit, because the truck's instructions do not cover them.
Practical questions before you buy
How much space do the models need?
Both K'NEX rides stand at least 78 cm tall, and Basic Fun gives no footprint for either. Choose the spot where the ride will stay assembled before you start. The Technic vehicles are far smaller: 28 cm long for the truck and 40 cm for the Lamborghini.
Which set suits a seven-year-old?
The Amazin' 8 Coaster 80216 is the only pick marked 7+. The 80 Model set starts at 8+, the amusement park and the dump truck at 9+, and the Lamborghini at 10+. Both K'NEX ride booklets also carry small-parts warnings, so keep the small parts away from children under 3.
Do K'NEX pieces fit Lego Technic?
Not by design. K'NEX rods click into connectors, while Technic pins and axles pass through holes in beams. Neither maker claims compatibility or offers an adapter, so treat K'NEX as a separate collection rather than a Technic extension.
Which should you choose?
For rides and movement, start with K'NEX. The Classic Amusement Park 17035 gives a builder of nine or older three motorised rides, while the Amazin' 8 Coaster 80216 brings a motorised coaster to seven-year-olds. The 80 Model Building Set 15269 suits a child who wants many builds and no batteries, and Basic Fun says its parts also work with other K'NEX sets.
For vehicle mechanisms, choose Lego Technic. Tipping Dump Truck 42203 is the hand-operated entry. Lamborghini Revuelto 42214 suits a builder of ten or older who wants to drive the finished model and has a compatible phone or tablet.
