Remote-controlled Lego® Technic sets fall into two groups. Newer models use the Lego CONTROL+ app, while older Power Functions sets come with a handheld infrared remote. The app adds steering profiles, live data and challenges. A physical remote is quicker to start and does not depend on a supported phone.
Our ranking only includes models that can actually be driven or operated from a distance in their official configuration. A motor on its own is not enough. We compared control functions, build quality, play value, availability and how sensible each model is to buy today. Current sets come first; retired collector models follow.
1. Lego Technic 42176 Porsche GT4 e-Performance: best overall
The Porsche GT4 e-Performance 42176 is the clearest recommendation for most buyers. Lego currently lists it with 836 pieces; older specifications still list 834. It is intended for ages 10 and up and is still sold new. Lego described it as the fastest car in the CONTROL+ range when it launched in August 2024.
The app controls forward and reverse movement, steering and the working lights. It also shows live driving data. Opening doors add a useful manual detail without getting in the way of driving. The Porsche is fast enough to need a clear floor, but compact enough to use indoors.

2. Lego Technic 42239 Batmobile Tumbler: best new release
The Batmobile Tumbler 42239 is the only new remote-controlled Technic model released in 2026. Its 719 pieces build a vehicle measuring 31 cm long for ages 12+, with the broad front axle and black armoured shape of the Tumbler from The Dark Knight trilogy.
A rechargeable CONTROL+ unit combines three motors and six lights. The app handles driving, steering and lighting, adds racing challenges and triggers an illuminated boost effect at the rear. It costs more than the Porsche, but brings current electronics and a distinctive licensed design.

3. Lego Technic 42214 Lamborghini Revuelto: best current supercar build
The Lamborghini Revuelto 42214 is the newest remote-controlled Technic supercar in this list. Its 1,135-piece build is larger and more detailed than the Porsche, while the age recommendation remains 10+. The grey bodywork with lime details gives it a very different look from earlier CONTROL+ cars.
CONTROL+ handles forward and reverse driving, steering, the headlights and live cockpit data. Choose the Lamborghini if the building experience and road-car styling matter more than outright speed. It costs more than the Porsche and needs a little more room on the shelf.

4. Lego Technic 42160 Audi RS Q e-tron: best for uneven floors
The Audi RS Q e-tron 42160 is the strongest choice for rally-style driving. The 914-piece model has individual suspension on all four wheels, a feature that helps it stay composed on rugs and small transitions where low sports cars struggle.
The CONTROL+ app drives and steers the Audi. Its tall stance and exposed Technic construction make the suspension easy to see in action. Lego marks the set as retiring soon, so new stock is less predictable than for the Porsche.

5. Lego Technic 42140 App-Controlled Transformation Vehicle: best stunt idea
The App-Controlled Transformation Vehicle 42140 remains one of Lego's most original CONTROL+ designs. The 772-piece tracked model has a different body on each side. Drive it into a wall and the vehicle flips over, revealing the second colour scheme and cockpit.
Two wide tracks make spins and quick direction changes easy. This is a better play set than a display model, and it works particularly well on smooth indoor floors. The set is retired, but the CONTROL+ profile remains available in the app on supported devices.

6. Lego Technic 42146 Liebherr LR 13000: best premium machine
The Liebherr Crawler Crane LR 13000 42146 is a remote-controlled engineering project rather than a racing toy. The 18+ model has 2,883 pieces and stands about 100 cm high. It needs a dedicated area for building and display.
CONTROL+ operates the crawler steering, rotating turntable, luffing jib and winch. The app also supports load sensing, statistics and challenges. The crane is impressive, but its high price and large footprint make it a specialist choice. It has retired or sold out in several markets, so check condition and completeness carefully when buying second-hand.

7. Lego Technic 42100 Liebherr R 9800 Excavator: most versatile large excavator
At 4,108 pieces, the Liebherr R 9800 Excavator 42100 is the largest build in this ranking. Four Large and three XL motors connect to two CONTROL+ hubs. The finished mining excavator is about 65 cm long and runs on working tracks.
The app drives and steers the excavator, rotates the superstructure and operates the boom, stick and bucket. You can record custom movement sequences and view position, power and distance data. It is retired and expensive used, but no other model here offers as many separately controlled working functions.

8. Lego Technic 42131 Cat D11 Bulldozer: best app-controlled bulldozer
With 3,854 pieces, the App-Controlled Cat D11 Bulldozer 42131 is one of the largest motorized Technic construction models. The 18+ build recreates the broad tracks, blade and rear ripper of the real machine.
The CONTROL+ app drives and steers the bulldozer and operates its motorized working functions. The slow gearing suits deliberate indoor operation rather than speed. The set is now retired, and its electronics account for a large share of its value. A used example should include the hub, motors and all track links.

9. Lego Technic 42114 Volvo 6x6 Articulated Hauler: best dump truck
The Volvo 6x6 Articulated Hauler 42114 combines a substantial 2,193-piece build with functions that suit the subject. The app steers through the articulated joint, drives the six-wheeled truck, changes gears and tips the load bed.
Its slow, controlled movement feels right for a construction vehicle. The articulated steering is also more interesting to watch than a conventional front axle. The Volvo takes time to build and is now retired, so a complete used set with electronics is generally the sensible route.

10. Lego Technic 42129 Mercedes-Benz Zetros: best technical 4x4
The 4x4 Mercedes-Benz Zetros Trial Truck 42129 is the most mechanically complex off-road vehicle in the ranking. The build has more than 2,100 pieces, four-wheel drive, working suspension and remotely operated differential locks.
CONTROL+ handles steering and driving as well as the differential functions. The Zetros rewards slow obstacle driving more than flat-out speed. Its ground clearance is modest for a trial truck, so small homemade courses suit it better than deep carpet. Check that a used set includes all electronic parts before comparing prices.

11. Lego Technic 42099 4x4 X-treme Off-Roader: best high-riding older model
The 4x4 X-treme Off-Roader 42099 uses huge tyres, high suspension travel and a sturdy 958-piece frame. It was one of the first Technic models built around CONTROL+ and still gives a good view of how the motors and drivetrain work together.
The app controls driving and steering and supplies live feedback. Its size and weight make it slower to react than the lightweight buggy, but it crosses rough indoor surfaces more confidently. Because the model is retired, verify hub and motor operation before buying.

12. Lego Technic 42124 Off-Road Buggy: best for jumps
The Off-Road Buggy 42124 takes inspiration from the radio-controlled cars of the 1980s. It uses 374 pieces, large tyres and a light chassis, so it accelerates quickly and handles ramps better than the heavier display-oriented models.
CONTROL+ provides steering, forward and reverse control, challenges and feedback. The small build is less detailed than the premium cars, but that is part of its appeal: there is less bodywork to knock loose during play. It is retired and usually easiest to find used.

13. Lego Technic 42095 Remote-Controlled Stunt Racer: best handheld-remote model
The Remote-Controlled Stunt Racer 42095 is the best choice for anyone who does not want to use a phone. Two Power Functions motors drive the left and right tracks independently through the supplied infrared handset.
That simple layout allows fast turns, wheelies and 360-degree spins. Infrared needs line of sight and works best indoors, but setup is immediate once the batteries are installed. The 324-piece set is retired; make sure a used offer includes the handset, receiver, battery box and both motors.

CONTROL+ or a physical remote?
Choose CONTROL+ if you want proportional app controls, live data and set-specific challenges. Before buying a retired model, check that the CONTROL+ app supports both the set profile and the phone or tablet you plan to use.
Choose Power Functions with a handheld remote if immediate control and long-term independence from an app matter more. Infrared has a shorter range, needs line of sight and cannot provide telemetry, but replacement components are easy to identify.
For any used remote-controlled Technic set, ask for a short video showing steering, forward and reverse movement and every powered function. Corroded battery contacts, missing hubs and untested motors can cost more to replace than the bricks themselves.
Which remote-controlled Lego Technic set should you buy?
The Porsche 42176 is the best all-round purchase because it is fast, current and easy to understand. The Batmobile Tumbler 42239 is the most interesting new release, with lighting and boost effects. The Lamborghini 42214 offers the fuller supercar build, while the Audi 42160 is better suited to uneven floors.
Among retired models, the Transformation Vehicle has the most distinctive play idea. The Liebherr R 9800 and Cat D11 suit construction-machine fans who value working functions over speed. If you want a real handset rather than an app, look for a Stunt Racer 42095 with complete electronics.
