Lego® Investment Experience from brick_invest

In the interview, he shares valuable tips for new Lego investors, such as avoiding the mistakes he's already made and not following every hype.

How did you become involved with Lego® Investments?

I have been doing a lot of research on investing, stocks, ETFs, etc. and came across the Reselling mit Kopf YouTube channel. As an old Lego® fan, I was immediately hooked. At the same time, I found an old Lego box in my parents' attic and was amazed at how much my old truck (5561) is worth today.

What is your strategy for your Lego® investments?

I try to buy just before EOL with as much discount as possible and sell when the value has doubled (even earlier for more expensive sets). Why this? I like it when there is some cash flow and a 100% profit is enough for me. Also, it gets harder to ship/sell later when the sets are worth even more. In fact, I can't really "justify" charging utopian amounts for sets, and the question is always who would really buy something like that at that price.

What has been your best Lego® investment so far?

  • Biggest discount on purchase: 1,90$ for the 75265 (approx. 90% discount on the RRP)
  • Cheap purchase of Lego® collections in which you can then find treasures (Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Knight's Castle, Supercar, etc.)
  • A customer needed to sell his Modular Building collection quickly. So I was able to get the last 10 modulars for a great price.
  • Discovering EOL sets in small stores that have already increased in value (Cloud City, T-Rex Outbreak, Hospital, Architecture Chicago, Heavy Drill, etc.).
  • Current largest actual win: American Diner, Corner Garage, Pirates of Baracuda Bay

What was your worst Lego® investment so far?

  • Buying sets way too early before EOL and then sitting on them for a long time (Architecture New York, City Life, AT-ST Robbers, etc.)
  • Getting lured in by blatant discounts and then buying sets you would never have bought otherwise (Belle's Winter Castle, Anna's Canoe Trip, Camping Vacation, Fire Department)

However, I have never sold a set at a loss.

What tips do you have for new Lego® investors?

  • Avoid all the mistakes I have already described here
  • Do not follow every hype
  • Don't mourn bad deals - new ones will come
  • Only invest money you don't need
  • Have patience and do not hope for "fast money
  • Have fun

Luke's experience with Lego® Investments

Luke, a member of the Brickfact community, shares his experience in Lego® investing and gives insight into his strategy, successes, and advice for beginners.

In the interview, Luke explains how he became interested in Lego investments through his brother, who collects Lego trains.

How did you hear about Lego® Investments?

How I came to the topic of Lego® Investment is easily explained. I myself grew up with Lego and always had a passion for the colorful bricks from Denmark. But I really got into the subject of Lego investment through my brother. Who began to collect Lego trains from different eras and also leave these original packaging as, as he said, a value investment. I quickly realized that Lego collecting can not only consist of assembling but also of collecting original packaged sets.

How do you set up your Lego® investment strategy?

My strategy is to collect these sets and if necessary simply as a value investment, but at the same time to build up a collection and always have memories of past years, on the one hand also to have a comparison as the parts to price ratio as well as the development of the creativity of the manufacturer.

What has been your most successful Lego® investment?

My best investment was more or less a chance to find at a flea market, where a seller was selling a Lego® set from the Star Wars series in its original box, this is the AT-TE with the set number 7675. My personal favorite.

What was your bad Lego® investment?

But there are not only good investments but also not-so-good ones. One example is the Lego Star Wars set with the set number 75320 from 2022. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the market has been flooded with this set and it is being sold at prices as low as 14 Euros.

What advice would you give to someone new to Lego® investing?

It was a great enrichment for me to find the Brickfact.com page via Instagram, which also shows me the current value of my sets and how the prices are changing, as well as offers and which sets are worth investing in or which are already EOL. My tip for people who want to start investing in Lego®. First of all, download the Brickfact app and keep track of the sets in the app. My next tip is to look at sales portals for OVP sets, or maybe just look at flea markets or even stores, but the best deals I have found are through the Brickfact app, which brings really juicy discounts. I hope I could share my experiences with you and infect you with the collecting fever.

Vinz Way to Lego® Investments

Vinz, a member of the Brickfact community, shares his experience in Lego® investing and offers insights into his investment strategy, success stories, and recommendations for newcomers to the field.

In the interview, Vinz explains how he got the idea to invest in Lego through a gift, the Lego Architecture Set London 21034. He focused on buying sets near their end of life (EOL) and at a discount of at least 25-50%.

What got you interested in Lego® investments?

I'm very excited to share my Lego® investing experience with you today. Let's start with how I came to see Lego as a profitable investment opportunity.

For more than three years, I have been investing money in Lego sets with the goal of increasing their value. It started with the Lego London 21034 architecture set that my best friend gave me on a trip to London. I was thrilled, this set brought me out of the so-called "dark ages" and made Lego absolutely present in my life again overnight.

As a result, I wanted to own all sets of the Skyline series and soon had to learn that there were sets like the 21026 Venice that were no longer available in regular stores, but could only be purchased on the "aftermarket". And for a hefty price of around 100 Euros and more. It was immediately clear to me that this could not be an isolated case.

Thousands of sets that are no longer available on the open market are sometimes offered and sold on the aftermarket for unbelievable amounts of money.

So I started to invest some money in Lego and made all the classic beginner's mistakes.

What is your approach to Lego® investments?

Anyone who wants to invest in Lego® must be aware that it is important to follow clear rules. It is basically the same as investing in stocks. If you want to be successful in a predictable way, you must not speculate! A set only increases in value when it is no longer available on the open market. Therefore, it is important to buy a set as close to the end of its life as possible. No matter how tempting the offers may be, a long storage period always reduces the profit! Also, you never know how long a set will really be on the market. Not to mention the fact that new editions of figures or entire sets can be released at any time!

In addition to the duration, the purchase price is also crucial. Especially when investing in Lego with a strategy, the profit is, as so often, in the purchase. There are exceptions like sets that are only sold by Lego. Here you can use VIP points and GWPs (gifts for purchase). All sets that make it into the free trade should generally only be bought at a discount.

I always try to get at least a 25% to 50% discount. This is already a calculable profit because almost every set can be sold for the original MSRP after the EOL.

What is your biggest Lego® investment success to date?

One of my most successful examples is the 75810 Upside Down House with the Stranger Things license. RRP 199,- and bought with a 30% discount for 140 EUR. EOL end of 2021. In the meantime, the set has an average selling price of 300 to 400 EUR, which corresponds to an increase in value and thus a profit of over 100% and more, with a holding period of only one year.

First of all, the exclusivity of the set is an essential factor for the increase in value. A set with exclusive figures and/or a license is always more interesting. Popular characters are also a good indicator of appreciation. If it appeals to fans outside the Lego® universe, you can't go wrong.

The timing of the sale is another important factor. A set has to be sold at some point to make a profit. There are various platforms such as eBay to sell the set, but the longer you wait, the harder it will be to find a buyer. A set should be sold within 1-2 years of EOL (end of life) to minimize the risk. There are of course other strategies, but this is the only one for steady growth. This is also an aspect of why you should not invest in too small or too big sets.

Another example of a successful Lego investment is the Star Wars AAT 75283 with a RRP of 39 EUR. This set contains an exclusive figure of a 332nd Clone Trooper and could be sold for an average of 50-60 EUR about 4 months after the EOL, which is again an increase of more than 100%.

What is your advice to new Lego® investors?

In summary, the exclusivity of the set, the purchase price, and the time of sale are crucial for the success of an investment. The rule is to buy as late and as cheaply as possible and to sell the set within 1-2 years. If you follow these rules, you can be very successful in investing in Lego® sets.

I hope I was able to help you with these useful tips and that I can go into more detail in the future. Of course, there are other strategies such as buy and hold - the important thing is to have a clear strategy. And with that, I wish you a lot of fun with investing.

Lego® Investment Tips from the Klemmbaustein_Investor

On his Instagram account of the same name, Klemmbaustein_Investor provides information about his Lego® investments and illustrates the return on investment of sets that are already EOL.

Lego® Investment Tips from the Klemmbaustein_Investor

He explains how his passion for the stock market and trading led him to invest in Lego. His strategy is based on making profits on purchases by taking advantage of discounts, cashback, and GWPs.

How did you find Lego® Investments?

Hi guys

My name on Instagram is Klemmbaustein_Investor, I'm in my mid-twenties and work full-time in sales.

I came to Lego® Investments through my passion for investing in the stock market when I was looking for alternatives. Buying and selling was already a private hobby that I professionalized by registering a business to invest and trade with Lego®.

How do you plan and organize your Lego® investments?

My strategy is mainly to make a profit on the purchase. I try to get the best prices as cheaply as possible with discounts, cashback, and GWPs and thus increase my return in the long run.

In which Lego® investment have you made the most profit?

The best investment in the last 5 years has been the orange 42046 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The performance in that short time was >200% which is really crazy. Unfortunately, I sold it too early and no longer have one in my collection.

Which Lego® investment did you make the least profit on?

My biggest initial mistake was buying sets when they were new to the market. It usually takes too long for them to go EOL. That's why I now try never to buy earlier than 1 year before EOL.

What tips can you give to new Lego® investors?

My tips for people who want to start. Don't just buy the sets that are all recommended on social media. Use social media, YouTube, Stonewars, and many other platforms to gradually familiarize yourself with the material. Follow me on Instagram, of course, where you will also be well-informed.

Richard has discovered Lego® Investments as an alternative investment opportunity

Richard discovered Lego® Investments as an alternative investment opportunity after he started trading stocks in 2020. He follows the classic buy-and-hold strategy for end-of-life (EOL) sets, selling most sets after 1 to 1 ½ years when they have appreciated at least 80%.

How did you become interested in Lego® investments?

In 2020, I started actively investing in the stock market and quickly became interested in alternative investment opportunities, which relatively quickly led me to resell and then to Lego® investments.

What methodology do you use for your Lego® investments?

I follow the classic buy-and-hold strategy for end-of-life (EOL) sets, selling most sets after 1 to 1 ½ years, with the additional point that at least 80% appreciation has been achieved. I expect the greatest percentage appreciation to occur during this period. In addition, I would not hold a set for more than five years.

What has been your best Lego® investment to date?

My best Lego® investment so far was the 75276 Stormtrooper Helmet, which gained 98% of its purchase price in seven months.

What was your worst Lego® investment so far?

My worst Lego® investment was the 21320 Dinosaur Fossils, which goes EOL in 2021 and has only gained 6.5% in value so far.

What should new Lego® investors consider to be successful?

As a new Lego® investor, it is important to register a business and think about which platforms you want to sell on. You should treat Lego investments like any other investment. This means that you must do thorough research and analysis before making an investment decision. An important aspect of this research is determining the current and potential future value of a particular Lego business.

Lego sets. To better determine the future value there are several indicators such as theme series (licenses), part out value and does the set perhaps belong to a new theme series (see Helm Collection). Also, my experience so far is that Lego sets that belong to popular series or movies perform strongly.

On the subject of diversification: Broadly spread never regretted is only partly true, you should not put all your eggs in one basket, but one of my mistakes was to buy too many different sets. Often I had only 1 or 2 sets. For example, for the Stormtrooper helmet I mentioned above, I only had 2 in stock, which of course annoys me a bit now. You should find a healthy balance. A solution could be 5-6 sets of medium size and a price range of 10-20. From a small price range e.g. Brickheadz, Speed Champions, etc. 3. High price range Disney Castle, etc.

As a beginner, you should rather not pay attention to topics like Flipping, because there the risk is much higher to tie up your capital for years and in the worst case to get a bad price.

Budgeting is also an important point that you should deal with as a beginner, as you can easily lose the overview at times when many sets are available at very high prices. Creating a watch list can be a good help. Beginners need to be very careful not to be overwhelmed by FOMO. If a potential set is not available at the desired price, do not invest!

To quote Warren Buffett (If I ever miss a streetcar, I just wait for the next one). My worst investments were the ones I bought out of FOMO. An affirmation that every Lego investor should take to heart is: As late as possible, as cheap as possible!

Daniel's advice to potential Lego® investors

Daniel shares his experiences and advice for aspiring Lego® investors after discovering Lego Investments through YouTube. His strategy focuses on sets associated with well-known brands or licenses, as well as exclusive sets.

What brought you to Lego® Investments?

I always thought that it should be possible to invest in Lego® like in any other brand, for example, trading cards. Then I got into it via YouTube (e.g. Resseling with head).

How do you strategize your Lego® investments?

Branded Lego® sets or exclusive sets.

Which Lego® investment has made you the most money?

Actually, my first investment is the Lego® 75274 helmet. I bought it for 60$ and sold it for 185$. Currently, the set is at 290$. Unfortunately, I sold it too early.

Which Lego® investment has been the least profitable for you?

The worst investment was the Lego® Harry Potter 75965 The Rise of Voldemort. I bought it too late when it was already EOL. And Lego 40516 Everyone is Special, I'm on +-0$ there. But is because it is EOL in the distance. But then I expect a big profit.

What advice do you have for newcomers to Lego® investing?

  1. Only buy sets that you would build yourself, in case they don't increase in value.
  2. Only buy sets that have a brand (license) behind them or are exclusive.
  3. Do not buy only 1 set, but in larger quantities. 1 set is not worth it.
  4. Do not neglect storage space.
