🗓 Mon, 08 Jan 2024

As in previous years, we are once again presenting the retiring Lego® sets that we think are best suited for investment in 2024. In our previous article, we already presented our top 5 retiring Lego sets under $100 for 2024.

In this article, we also present our top 5 Lego investment sets under $200 for 2024. This selection is based on extensive analysis and assessments of the market potential of each set. We highlight the special features and reasons why these sets could be a promising investment.

Below you will find our investment analysis of the top five Lego EOL sets under $200.

1. Lego® Ideas 21318 Tree House

The Lego® Ideas tree house was released in August 2019 as the 26th set in the Lego Ideas theme. The set is offered at an RRP (recommended retail price) of $249.99 and has a POV (part out value) of just under $270. If we look at the Part Out Value in relation to the RRP, it is poor. However, the set is on offer for less than $220. Alternatively, a purchase in combination with VIP points and GWPs (Gift with Purchase) is also an option.

The market life of the Ideas tree house is expected to be over four and a half years, which is longer than the usual average, as Lego sets usually retire after two to a maximum of three years. On the one hand, this shows that the set is very popular, which is positive from an investment perspective.

On the other hand, a long market life can have a negative impact on future performance, as many had the opportunity to buy the set over this period. Accordingly, there are also many investors who have the set in their portfolio.

Target group: Adults

In our detailed Lego® Ideas tree House investment analysis, we have already shown that the set's target group is predominantly made up of AFOLs (Adult Fans of Lego). This is definitely relevant for an investment, as the target group is a strong buyer.

Ideas sets are generally popular with adults. This is partly due to the fact that Ideas sets are designed by adult Lego fans. Subsequently, the sets with the most votes are produced by Danish brick manufacturers.

Ideas sets with good performance

The past few years have shown that Ideas sets can be a worthwhile Lego® investment. One example is the Lego Ideas 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay, which was released in April 2020 and r at the end of 2021.

The set had an RRP of $199.99 and a current market value of just under $291. This corresponds to a percentage increase in value of just under 45% and an annual return of 20.6%, which is a good value.

Value Increase 21322

Despite a relatively long time on the market, we expect the Ideas tree house to perform well after retirement due to the popularity of the set.

2. Lego® Star Wars 75365 Yavin 4 Rebel Base

The rebel base on Yavin 4 has been a well-known location in the films since the beginning of the Star Wars saga. The Danish brick manufacturer Lego® released the film location in the form of a set in July 2023.

The Lego Star Wars 75365 Rebel Base on Yavin 4 consists of 1,066 pieces and is particularly interesting for an investment because of the expensive Star Wars minifigures included in the set.

The set is offered at an RRP of $169.99 but can be bought for less than $14 on offer. The part-out value of the set is more than $260, which is good value in relation to the offer price.

Valuable Star Wars minifigures

As already mentioned, the rebel base on Yavin 4 is particularly interesting because of the minifigures included in the set. The set contains 12 minifigures, eight of which are exclusive. Together, the minifigures are already worth almost $90, which is more than 50% of the RRP and a very good value.

Minifigures 75365

Lego® Star Wars: Timeless Investments

Since the start of the Lego® Star Wars cooperation in 1999, almost 800 sets have been released, which confirms the great popularity of the theme. Accordingly, the target group for the rebel base on Yavin 4 is also large, which is important for a Lego investment. With an age recommendation of 8+, the set is suitable for both children and adults.

Finally, it should be noted that investing in Lego sets with exclusive minifigures always involves a small risk. It is quite possible that exclusive minifigures will reappear in another set at a later date and thus influence the performance.

3. Lego® Harry Potter 76389 Hogwarts Chamber of Secrets

The Lego® Harry Potter 76389 Hogwarts Chamber of Secrets was released in June 2021 and will retire at the end of the year according to current information. The set has an RRP of $149.99 and can be bought on offer for under $120.

The part-out value of the set is around $180, which is only a mediocre value.

20 years of Lego® Harry Potter

The Chamber of Secrets was released as part of the 20th Lego® Harry Potter anniversary along with five other sets. The sets can be combined with each other and together form a large Hogwarts complex, so Harry Potter fans can put together their own personal Hogwarts world.

The Chamber of Secrets is also the largest set in the series, which makes it interesting for Lego investors. Harry Potter fans will need the set to recreate a detailed Hogwarts world,

Another highlight is the packaging of the set, which is printed with a gold-colored 20th Lego Harry Potter seal, which makes it interesting for collectors.

Golden Voldemort minifigure

The Lego® Harry Potter 76389 Hogwarts Chamber of Secrets contains one of six golden Harry Potter minifigures. It is Lord Voldemort, who could be highly coveted by collectors in the future. The golden minifigures are only included in the Harry Potter 20th anniversary sets.

The set contains a total of 11 minifigures, 10 of which are exclusive. Together they are already worth $47.

In summary, we think the 6389 Hogwarts Chamber of Secrets is an exciting Lego investment in 2024, especially because of the valuable minifigures included in the set and the gold-colored Lord Voldemort.

4. Lego® Ninjago 71741 NINJAGO City Gardens

The Lego® Ninjago 71741 The Gardens of Ninjago City set is one of the largest Lego sets of all time with 5,686 pieces and was released in January 2021. After an expected market life of four years, the set will go EOL at the end of 2024.

The RRP of the set is $349.99, resulting in an average part price of around 6.2 cents/part, which is relatively inexpensive.

Nevertheless, attention should be paid to offers, as the set only has a part out value of around $590.

Part of the Ninjago game complex

The Lego® Ninjago 71741 The Gardens of Ninjago City is one of our top five retiring Lego sets of 2024 for a number of reasons, as it is part of the larger Ninjago play complex that recreates key elements of the movie. The game complex includes the following sets:

  • Lego Ninjago 70620 City (2017)
  • Lego 70657 Ninjago City Harbor (2018)
  • Lego Ninjago 71741 The Gardens of Ninjago City (2021)
  • Lego Ninjago 71799 The Markets of Ninjago City (2023)

As a further highlight, the set contains 22 minifigures, 19 of which are exclusive. However, those included in the set are currently not yet worth a total of around $55. However, this may change after retirement.

Reference sets: Impressive performance

The sets in the Lego® Ninjago theme have performed very well in recent years. The large sets that we have already listed deserve special mention here. One example is Lego 70657 Ninjago City Harbor, which retired at the end of 2019 after a market life of 1 ½ years.

The set had an RRP of $229.99 and today has a market value of $534. This corresponds to a percentage increase in value of 132% and an annual return of 23%.

Value Increase 70657

After End of Life, we also expect The Gardens of Ninjago City to perform well. At best, the set is bought on offer or in combination with VIP points and GWPs to reduce the purchase price. GWPs can also be seen as a Lego investment or as an indirect discount.

5. Lego® Creator Expert 10320 Eldorado Fortress

The Lego® Creator Expert 10320 Eldorado Fortress is based on the Lego Pirates 6276 Eldorado Fortress from 1989 and was released in June 2023. After a relatively short market life of probably 1 ½ years, the set is due to retire at the end of the year.

The RRP of the set is $219.99, which, with 2,509 parts, results in an average part price of around 8.6 cents/part. This puts the set in the middle of the price range. The part out value of the set is almost $440, which is a good value.

The set is sold exclusively by Lego and is therefore rarely on sale. In this case, it is advisable to combine the purchase with VIP points and GWPs.

Homage to the Pirates theme

The Lego® Creator Expert 10320 Eldorado Fortress pays homage to the Lego Pirates theme world, in which new sets are only released at irregular intervals.

Furthermore, as already mentioned, the set is based on the Lego Pirates 6276 Eldorado Fortress from 1989 and therefore has a high nostalgia factor, especially for older Lego fans. The set from 1989 has an impressive market value of just under $1,800. The design of the packaging is also based on the original from 1989.

However, sets from recent years have also had an impressive performance. One example is the Lego Pirates 70412 Soldiers Fort, which had an RRP of $34.99 and retired at the end of 2015. Today, the set has a market value of $144, which corresponds to an increase in value of over 311% compared to the RRP.

Popular with the Lego® fan community

The Lego® Creator Expert 10320 Eldorado Fortress enjoys great popularity in the Lego fan community, e.g. there are numerous Lego Youtubers on YouTube who are enthusiastic about the set. In combination with the high nostalgic value for older Lego enthusiasts, we expect the Eldorado Fortress to perform very well after End of Life.

As already mentioned, we recommend combining the purchase with VIP points and GWPs to achieve an indirect discount. If the order value for GWPs is higher than the RRP of the set, the purchase can be combined with exclusive EOL BrickHeadz, for example. You can find a selection of sets in our article on the top 5 Lego investment sets under $30.

Lego® investment sets under $200: Conclusion

These sets, which come from various theme worlds such as Ideas, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Ninjago, offer attractive features: They are popular with specific fan communities, contain exclusive minifigures and have good future appreciation potential.

For investors, it is important to consider factors such as collector's value and nostalgia factor in addition to the current market value.
