The largest LEGO® Technic models are substantial mechanical building projects in which beams, pins, gears and pneumatic or motorised elements create working mechanisms. The list is not a judgement on which model is best: it compares individual retail sets by piece count, rather than height, price, motor count or perceived complexity. That distinction matters because a tall crane can use fewer elements than a densely built supercar.

1. Liebherr R 9800 Excavator (42100)

The 4,108-piece Liebherr R 9800 Excavator uses the CONTROL+ app to drive and rotate the model and operate its boom and bucket. Released in 2019, the mining machine remains the largest Technic set in this piece-count ranking.

Two Smart Hubs and seven motors divide those powered functions across the tracked undercarriage and upper structure. The app also supplies control screens and feedback rather than leaving the model dependent on manual switches. Its 4,108 pieces make the vast mining excavator a dense mechanical build as well as a large display model.

2. Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear Megacar (42232)

Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear Megacar is listed for 2026 with 4,104 pieces, placing set 42232 second. No dimensions or functions are attributed to the model here without verified product information.

3. Rough Terrain Crane (42082)

The 2-in-1 Rough Terrain Crane combines four-wheel steering, four-wheel drive and a rotating superstructure with an extending boom. A Power Functions motor operates selected upper functions, including the winch and outriggers, while the engine’s pistons move as the chassis rolls. The alternative build turns the same inventory into a mobile pile driver, so the second configuration is more than a smaller version of the crane.

At the time of release, its 4,057-element inventory made it the first Technic set to cross the 4,000-piece line. The long boom and broad eight-wheel carrier also show why physical span and inventory size describe different aspects of a model.

The outriggers create a stable working footprint around the wheeled carrier before the boom is extended. Together with the powered winch, that sequence gives the model the operating layout of a mobile crane rather than merely its outline.

4. Bucket Wheel Excavator (42055)

The Bucket Wheel Excavator is a 2-in-1 industrial model built around a continuous material-handling process. Its supplied Power Functions motor drives the bucket wheel, conveyor belts and movement of the tracked base, allowing small elements to travel from the digging wheel through the machine. The upper structure rotates, and the large boom can be raised and lowered. The same parts can instead form a Mobile Aggregate Processing Plant, preserving the conveyor theme in a different layout.

That alternative configuration changes where material enters and leaves the build while retaining the linked belts. It therefore explores the same industrial process through two different machines, a contrast to the single vehicle configurations used by the licensed cars below.

Released in 2016 with 3,929 pieces, set 42055 is the oldest model in the current top ten. Its fourth-place position also makes it the highest-ranked Technic set here from before 2018.

5. McLaren P1 (42172)

The 3,893-piece McLaren P1 joined the range in 2024. This 1:8-scale model follows the structure familiar from Technic’s large supercars: steering, suspension and a piston engine are connected through a multi-speed transmission. Its seven-speed gearbox includes a shifting drum, while the V8 sits behind the cockpit.

Opening dihedral doors and an adjustable rear wing reproduce two recognisable parts of the road car’s configuration. Beneath that bodywork, the shifting drum organises the seven ratios as one linked mechanism rather than a collection of isolated display details.

6. App-Controlled Cat® D11 Bulldozer (42131)

The LEGO TECHNIC CONTROL+ app operates the bulldozer from a smartphone or tablet. Its blade and rear ripper move, and the tracked model also contains a six-cylinder engine with moving pistons beneath the bodywork. It is an 18+ set, consistent with its scale and involved mechanisms.

Motorised tracks let the heavy model drive and steer, while app controls raise, lower and tilt the front blade and position the rear ripper. The modular body panels can be removed to expose some of the mechanisms beneath the yellow Caterpillar bodywork. This makes its 3,854 elements serve both the exterior shape and the linked working systems.

The bulldozer’s 3,854-piece inventory is used very differently from the supercar bodywork around it in the table: motors distribute movement to the tracks and working equipment, while removable panels retain access to the mechanical core.

7. Ferrari Daytona SP3 (42143)

Ferrari Daytona SP3 was released in 2022 with 3,778 pieces. The 1:8-scale car has steering, suspension and a V12 engine with moving pistons. Its eight-speed sequential gearbox is operated through paddle shifters, with a separate selector for neutral and reverse.

Butterfly doors open beside the low cockpit, and the removable roof panel changes the model from a closed to an open configuration. Those moving body sections sit alongside the drivetrain rather than replacing the mechanical functions expected from a large Technic car.

8. Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 (42115)

Released in 2020, the 3,696-piece Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 has working steering and suspension, scissor doors and an eight-speed sequential gearbox. A V12 engine with moving pistons sits beneath the transparent engine cover.

Paddle shifters operate the transmission from the cockpit, and the rear spoiler can be positioned manually. The lime-green panels and gold-coloured wheels distinguish the body without changing the shared mechanical vocabulary of the large Technic cars.

Its 3,696 pieces also support a distinct presentation: the transparent engine cover leaves the V12 visible, while the contrasting wheels frame the low, wedge-shaped body. The 2020 release is the earliest of the three Italian and French 1:8 supercars grouped in the lower half of the table.

9. Bugatti Chiron (42083)

The Bugatti Chiron translates the road car into a 1:8-scale Technic structure. Its eight-speed gearbox connects to a W16 engine with moving pistons, and paddle shifters sit behind the steering wheel. The model also includes independent suspension, an active rear wing and a speed key used to change the wing’s position. Opening doors reveal the cockpit, while a small overnight bag fits beneath the front hood.

Released in 2018 with 3,599 pieces, the Chiron established much of the configuration later seen across Technic’s large 1:8 supercars: a complex transmission and piston engine enclosed by recognisable licensed bodywork.

10. Mercedes-Benz G 500 PROFESSIONAL Line (42177)

Released in 2024 with 2,891 pieces, the Mercedes-Benz G 500 PROFESSIONAL Line is arranged around an off-road chassis rather than the low supercar format of the nearby entries. It includes steering, raised suspension and a six-cylinder engine with moving pistons, plus a gearbox with drive, neutral and reverse settings.

Differential locks and a working winch extend the model’s functions beyond its drivetrain. Opening doors and bonnet, a roof ladder and a spare wheel reinforce the utility-vehicle layout and make the upright body more than a shell around the chassis.

How the ranking works

This ranking is ordered by descending piece count. It covers individual retail sets only; bundles, value packs and accessory products are excluded so every position represents one complete set sold under its own set number.

The selection mixes industrial machinery and licensed performance or off-road cars. The shared metric keeps those very different subjects comparable without assigning unsupported feature scores or treating powered operation as inherently more valuable than a mechanical gearbox.

Piece count also explains why a physically imposing model need not rank above a compact one: long beams can create height and reach with relatively few elements, whereas gearboxes and layered bodywork raise the total quickly. Release year is shown for context only and does not give newer sets priority.

The ordering is therefore a snapshot of the eligible catalogue and can change when another large individual set is released.
