Castle building sets beyond Lego: expandable castles and landmarks

🗓 Updated:
📘 Bricks

Castle sets from brands other than Lego come in two kinds: knight's castles for play, some of which grow with add-on sets, and finished landmarks for display. Start with BlueBrixx Bear Rock 109641 for a castle that grows in modules, Lumibricks King's Castle Treasury L9105 for lit rooms and figures, and Reobrix King's Castle 55016 for one big castle; for a landmark, choose BlueBrixx Neuschwanstein 108686 or the larger Reobrix Himeji Castle 55017.

Lego's benchmarks are the Creator 3in1 Medieval Horse Knight Castle 31168 for play and the Architecture Neuschwanstein Castle 21063 for display. The alternatives push in different directions: add-on modules, built-in lighting, a castle that folds open, or a much larger landmark.

Play castles: one box or a growing system

Lego 31168 sets the standard here: knights, horses and rooms you can reach. Three of the four alternatives are also built at minifigure scale. BlueBrixx and Lumibricks let your castle grow with further sets, while Reobrix packs everything into one large folding castle.

Lego Medieval Horse Knight Castle 31168: the play benchmark

This Creator 3in1 set is Lego's current castle for knights-and-horses play outside its licensed themes. Its 1,371 pieces build a castle over 31 cm high, 36 cm wide and 30 cm deep. Six minifigures and two posable horses come with it. The back opens onto the great hall, stable, smithy, king's bedroom and writing room, and the drawbridge moves.

The same pieces rebuild into a jousting set with a small castle or a medieval town with a windmill, one model at a time. That suits a builder aged nine or over who wants knights and horses, or anyone who enjoys rebuilding one box into three models.

The limit is growth. Lego's larger medieval sets, Lion Knights' Castle 10305 and Medieval Town Square 10332, are retired, and no current Lego set extends this castle. That gap is where BlueBrixx and Lumibricks come in.

BlueBrixx Bear Rock Base Castle 109641: a castle that grows in modules

  • Pieces: 1,766
  • Assembled size: 32.7 × 32.7 cm, 26.6 cm tall
  • Age: 10+
  • Included: modular wall sections, towers and battlements, removable roofs
  • Instructions: free 110-page PDF

Bear Rock (Burg Bärenfels in German) is the starting point of BlueBrixx's modular medieval castle, and BlueBrixx says it can grow with additional expansions. The roofs lift off so you can reach the rooms. The product page lists no figures, but the manual's overview shows seven minifigures and a horse.

Each add-on is a separate set. The keep 109642 adds 1,140 pieces, a 35.2 cm tower with detachable floor levels, and its own figures and gear. The gatehouse 109648 (1,093 pieces) brings a drawbridge, a portcullis and a removable battlement walkway. The wall expansion 109650 (421 pieces) adds turrets and a hidden chamber, and the range continues with the Palas 109003, an inn, a smithy and minifigure packs.

Make sure you buy the current 109641 with 1,766 pieces. BlueBrixx gave its whole range new item numbers on 30 June 2026, and the earlier Bear Rock editions 105506 and 107974 had different piece counts. Compared with Lego 31168, the base is lower at 26.6 cm and builds one model instead of three. In return, it is the only set here with a whole system of add-on modules behind it.

Lumibricks King's Castle Treasury L9105: lit rooms and five figures

  • Pieces: 3,209
  • Assembled size: 36.5 × 34.4 cm, 53.2 cm tall
  • Age: 16+
  • Included: 5 minifigures, 16 light points and 5 light strips, 3 printed instruction booklets
  • Power: holder for 3 AA batteries, or a USB cable with a power bank

Lumibricks King's Castle Treasury L9105

Lumibricks, formerly Funwhole, builds lighting into both of its castle sets here. The Treasury is a Gothic building set into a mountain, with two levels, four interactive sides and 13 movable parts. Its five minifigures are a king, a steward, an envoy, a guard and a thief, plus a maid outfit.

With 3,209 pieces and a 16+ rating, this is a project for older teens and adults. The lights are part of the build and run from three AA batteries or a USB cable with a power bank. Tweezers and a part lifter are included.

Next to Lego 31168, the Treasury has more than twice the pieces, one figure fewer and a height of 53.2 cm against just over 31 cm. Lumibricks pairs it with the Banquet Hall, which is how this castle grows: a second lit building beside it rather than a wall system.

Lumibricks Castle Banquet Hall L9071: the matching hall

  • Pieces: 3,232
  • Assembled size: 42 × 30 cm, 40 cm tall
  • Age: 16+
  • Included: 7 minifigures, 15 light points and 5 light strips, removable back panel
  • Status: marked "Retiring Soon" by Lumibricks

Lumibricks Castle Banquet Hall L9071

The Banquet Hall is the second building of the Lumibricks pair. It comes with seven minifigures and a long table that you can remove to turn the room into a dance floor. The entire back panel comes off, so you can reach the interior from behind.

On its own it is a lit hall rather than a complete castle, so it works best beside the Treasury. Together the two sets bring 6,441 pieces and 12 minifigures. Lumibricks marks the hall as retiring soon.

Reobrix King's Castle 55016: one big castle that folds open

  • Pieces: about 3,999
  • Assembled size: 31 × 55.5 cm closed, 87.8 cm wide when open, 64.5 cm tall
  • Age: 14+
  • Included: sticker decoration; no lights; figures not stated by the maker
  • Expansion: none, the castle is complete in one box

Reobrix King's Castle 55016

Reobrix puts a whole castle into one set. The three-tier King's Castle can stand closed or fold open, and Reobrix describes these as two ways to play. Inside are a royal palace, feast hall, treasure vault, bedroom, kitchen, wine cellar, weapons store and washroom, plus a clock tower, a command room and a watchtower.

At 64.5 cm, it is the tallest castle in this guide, and opening it nearly triples the width. Reobrix neither lists nor shows minifigures for this set, so do not count on figures for those rooms.

Against Lego 31168, you get almost three times the pieces and about twice the height, but no add-on modules to extend it later. Pick it if you want one large castle finished in a single project rather than a system that grows over time.

Landmark castles for display

Landmark sets show a real castle at micro-scale rather than minifigure scale, and the composition is complete when the last piece is in place. Lego's reference is Neuschwanstein; BlueBrixx makes the same castle at a similar size, and Reobrix a much larger Himeji.

Lego Architecture Neuschwanstein Castle 21063: the landmark benchmark

Lego sets Neuschwanstein in a forest landscape. The 3,455 pieces build a display over 31 cm high, 46 cm wide and 20 cm deep, with spires, turrets, a courtyard, staircases, gabled roofs and small interior builds. You can switch the trees between summer and autumn foliage, and a nameplate sits on the base.

Depth is rarely the problem at 20 cm; the 46 cm width is the measurement to check. Choose 21063 if you want this castle with Lego's seasonal trees, nameplate and printed booklet. If the subject matters more than the brand, BlueBrixx 108686 is the closest match in size.

BlueBrixx Neuschwanstein Castle (Size M) 108686: the same castle, slightly larger

  • Pieces: about 3,800
  • Assembled size: 49.6 × 20.8 cm, 32.3 cm tall
  • Age: 14+
  • Included: no figures
  • Instructions: free 248-page PDF

BlueBrixx's Size M model shows the same castle on almost the same footprint as Lego 21063: 49.6 × 20.8 cm against 46 × 20 cm. At 32.3 cm, it is also about as tall. That makes it the closest like-for-like comparison in this guide, and the natural pick if you want Neuschwanstein from a maker other than Lego.

The piece count is about 3,800: the product page says 3,797 and the manual cover 3,778. BlueBrixx highlights the towers and facade details, includes no figures and rates the set 14+, which matters if you are buying for a teenager. A much larger BlueBrixx Neuschwanstein exists as 109639; this guide covers the Size M model.

Reobrix Himeji Castle 55017: a much larger landmark

  • Pieces: about 7,105
  • Assembled size: 70 × 45.5 cm, 35.5 cm tall
  • Age: 14+
  • Included: removable keep interior, cherry-blossom trees, stone base, nameplate
  • Instructions: printed colour manual

Reobrix Himeji Castle 55017

Himeji has the most pieces in this guide, about 7,105, on a 70 × 45.5 cm footprint. The interior of the main keep is removable and shows rooms such as a meditation room, a bedroom and a tea area. Cherry-blossom trees, a stone base and a nameplate complete the display.

It is a different subject from Neuschwanstein, so treat it as a landmark choice rather than a direct swap. Lego's own Himeji Castle 21060 is listed as retiring, which is why it is not a recommendation here.

Buy 55017 for a large centrepiece with an interior to explore. Its footprint is about 1.5 times as wide and more than twice as deep as Lego 21063, so plan for a sideboard or a deep shelf rather than a standard bookcase.

Shelf space and growth

Footprint and height decide where a castle can live. Lego 21063 and BlueBrixx 108686 need only about 20 cm of depth, but up to 49.6 cm of width; Himeji is the exception at 70 × 45.5 cm. Among the play castles, Lego 31168 (36 × 30 cm) and Bear Rock (32.7 × 32.7 cm) take a similar square of shelf.

Height is the next limit. The Treasury stands 53.2 cm tall and King's Castle 64.5 cm, so measure the space under the shelf above. Reobrix's castle also changes width, from 31 cm closed to 87.8 cm open, with a depth of 55.5 cm when closed. Leave room to open it where it stands.

Bear Rock grows outward with each module. The keep measures 18.3 × 20 cm and stands 35.2 cm tall, the gatehouse 24.7 × 22.1 cm and 27.7 cm, and the wall expansion 32.7 × 7.7 cm and 14.3 cm. BlueBrixx does not publish the footprint of a combined castle, and the module sizes cannot simply be added up, because the result depends on how you join them. Mark out the planned layout on your shelf before you buy the next module. The two Lumibricks buildings stand side by side, so reserve room for both footprints.

Instructions and figures

Lego supplies 21063 with a printed booklet plus the Lego Builder app; for 31168, it lists the app and offers three downloadable PDFs. Lumibricks includes printed booklets with both castle sets, three for the Treasury, and publishes PDF versions on its manual site. Reobrix includes a printed colour manual with Himeji but does not state the format for King's Castle.

BlueBrixx provides free PDFs for both of its sets, 110 pages for Bear Rock and 248 for Neuschwanstein. It does not state whether a printed booklet is in the box. Its instruction search works by the item number on the box or order confirmation, and old numbers still work.

Figures belong to the play castles. Lego 31168 brings a named cast: a horse knight king, champion, archer and spearman, a blacksmith and a serpent knight, plus two horses. Beyond the seven figures and horse in Bear Rock's manual, BlueBrixx adds more through the keep and separate minifigure packs. BlueBrixx Neuschwanstein has no figures, and Reobrix does not state any for either castle.

Common questions about castle sets

Do these castles connect to Lego bricks?

BlueBrixx lists its bricks as standard format, and the Bear Rock modules are designed to join each other. Lumibricks and Reobrix make no compatibility claim for these castles. No maker says its castle connects to a Lego castle, so plan each one as a separate build. Our guide to Lego alternatives explains brick sizes and compatibility in more detail.

Which castle suits a younger builder?

Lego 31168 (9+) and BlueBrixx Bear Rock 109641 (10+) are the youngest-rated castles here. Reobrix rates both of its castles 14+, as does BlueBrixx for Neuschwanstein. The Lumibricks sets are 16+, and Lego's Neuschwanstein is 18+.

Which castle set should you buy?

For a castle that grows over time, start with BlueBrixx Bear Rock 109641 and add the gatehouse, keep or wall expansion as space allows. For lit rooms and a 16+ build, choose Lumibricks King's Castle Treasury L9105, then add the Banquet Hall L9071.

For one big castle in a single project, Reobrix King's Castle 55016 is the tallest set here and needs no further purchases. For a younger builder who wants knights and horses, Lego 31168 is the natural start, with six minifigures and three models in one box.

For Neuschwanstein, pick Lego 21063 or BlueBrixx 108686 at a very similar size. For the largest landmark, Reobrix Himeji Castle 55017 needs about 70 cm of width and offers a removable keep interior in return.
