BlueBrixx Blaustein Castle dimensions: how big each expansion makes it

🗓 Published:

📘 Bricks

The base Blaustein Castle measures 40.6 × 39.8 cm and stands 29.5 cm high, but it does not stay that size. The keep takes it to 55 cm high, the outer bailey to a footprint of about 65 × 50 cm, and with the gatehouse the castle covers roughly 100 × 72 cm and stands almost 74 cm high. To start, our pick is the current base castle 109778 with 5,562 pieces; plan the space for the outer bailey when you buy it, because from that stage on the castle needs at least 70 × 50 cm of surface.

Every size, piece count and price here comes from the BlueBrixx shop and the sets' Amazon listings, checked on 14 October 2026. BlueBrixx gives three numbers per set without saying which is which, and we explain below the table how we read them. We built Blaustein Castle ourselves in an earlier edition with the first expansions. We have not measured the current edition, so the figures are the maker's. In German the set is called Burg Blaustein, which is the name you will see on German listings and in BlueBrixx instructions.

Our pick to start: the base castle

BlueBrixx Blaustein Castle 109778: the base castle with 5,562 pieces

  • Size: 40.6 × 39.8 cm footprint, 29.5 cm high, about 51 × 50 studs
  • Pieces: 5,562 in standard format, rated 14 and up by BlueBrixx
  • Included: 7 minifigures and several printed parts with the castle's coat of arms
  • BlueBrixx shop price: €219.95

The base castle is a solid stone house on a rock, surrounded by a wooden palisade with a gate. Inside are three floors: the kitchen at the bottom, the hall with a fireplace and wall paintings on the first floor, and the lord's bedroom under the roof. This edition has carried the number 109778 since BlueBrixx renumbered its range on 30 June 2026.

For comparison, Lego states that its Lion Knights' Castle 10305 measures over 44 × 33 cm and over 38 cm high when closed. Blaustein needs a similar footprint but is lower. Our Lion Knights' Castle review covers the Lego set. The real difference is what comes next: Blaustein is the first piece of a whole castle complex. On its own the base castle looks modest, and it only comes into its own with the expansions.

The order of the stages is BlueBrixx's own. Each expansion needs the ones before it, so the gatehouse needs the base castle, keep, outer bailey, hall, weir walk and mint tower. We converted studs at 8 mm per stud and rounded. Why the Lego grid is 8 mm per stud is explained in our guide to Lego brick dimensions.

How we read BlueBrixx's sizes

BlueBrixx gives three numbers in millimetres for each set without naming width, depth or height. For the expansions, they describe the whole castle after that stage, not the module on its own. The keep shows this: its Amazon listing gives 40.6 × 39.8 × 55.1 cm, the same footprint as the base castle, only taller. For the outer bailey, BlueBrixx writes that the footprint grows to 70 × 50 cm, and its size of 65.3 × 49.3 cm fits that. The third number is the height every time.

Two figures break the pattern. The Ramp Shield is listed smaller than the castle with the gatehouse. BlueBrixx does not say whether the figure describes the castle without the gatehouse, and unlike the big expansions, its product page names no required sets. Plan with the gatehouse size in that case. The Fortress Points are a small add-on, and their size is the module alone. One set builds one of three versions.

For the weir walk, BlueBrixx's description says "an impressive 75 cm", while the listed size is 72.9 cm. Plan with 75 cm to be safe.

7 Gatehouse33,977€1,239.65
9 with Ramp Shield and Fortress Points37,587€1,369.55

The piece counts are the sums of the sets. The finished castle has fewer, because each expansion takes sections of the castle apart. BlueBrixx says the removed assemblies are reused, and the weir walk and mint tower also reuse single parts. Prices are from the BlueBrixx shop for delivery to Germany on 14 October 2026; the shop adjusts prices and availability to the delivery country. Every set in the table was in stock that day. That has not always been the case: in 2022 and 2023 the castle was often sold out.

The stages one by one

Keep: almost twice the height

The Keep Expansion 109780 with 1,835 pieces adds a tower with an access stair, a room with a fireplace and bed, and a watch platform, plus a section of palisade. The footprint stays the same, and the height rises from 29.5 to 55.1 cm. From here on, the castle no longer fits in an ordinary shelf compartment.

In the first edition we built, the tower was the hardest part of the whole castle. BlueBrixx says that first keep also differed in colour from the base castle. Version 2 has its instructions split into sub-steps and matches the base castle's colours.

Outer bailey and hall: the jump in footprint

The Outer Bailey 109955 makes the castle grow most in width: from 40 to about 65 cm, or 70 × 50 cm by BlueBrixx's own figure. It adds a wooden outer bailey with a palisade, wall walk, watchtower and guardhouse, a workshop on the open ground floor and 8 minifigures. You also rebuild the base castle: the palisade gives way to a stone wall with a new gatehouse and a working portcullis.

The Hall Expansion 109080 with 5,494 pieces barely changes the footprint, to 65.9 × 50.4 cm. It brings a Gothic hall with a vaulted cellar, new quarters for the lord and lady, and a knights' hall that leads to the chapel. The roof lifts off and almost the whole outer wall folds open, so leave some room in front of that side.

Weir walk and mint tower: the castle becomes a cube

The Weir Walk Expansion 109711 surrounds the hall with timber hoardings, the covered wooden galleries that hang off a castle wall. It also adds a wooden top storey to the keep, plus oriels and turrets. Afterwards the castle stands on 72.2 × 71.3 cm and is just under 73 cm high, or 75 cm in BlueBrixx's text. That is its final height; later stages spread out rather than up.

The Mint Tower 109713 with 5,442 pieces adds a massive tower with a mint, a powder store, a wall walk and a ramp. Its palisade pieces let you lay out the outer courtyard as you like, and the listed size grows to 87.4 × 72.1 cm.

Gatehouse: a metre wide

The Gatehouse 109714 completes the outer bailey's change from timber to stone: a stone gatehouse with a stair tower, guardroom, drawbridge and portcullis, archive and courtyard. The castle then measures 100 × 72 cm and stands 73.5 cm high. At this stage you need furniture at least a metre wide.

Buildings around the castle

BlueBrixx sells more buildings in the Blaustein line that are not stages of the castle. They stand next to it and need space of their own:

Set (item no.)PiecesBlueBrixx priceSize per BlueBrixx
Tithe Barn 1091164,283€139.9538.1 × 20.3 × 23.4 cm

Armourer 1097442,082€79.9519 × 33 × 20 cm
Palisade Expansion: Auxiliary Smithy 109859402€14.9518.3 × 15.1 × 10.4 cm

The tithe barn connects to the castle's palisade. At 54 × 41 cm, the stables take up almost as much space as the base castle. The Palisade Gate 109270 has no listed size, and the Palisade Expansion 109412 was listed as "coming soon" on 14 October 2026.

How much space to plan

Add about 5 cm on every side of each size. That leaves room for your hand when dusting the walls and keeps the castle away from the edge. These are the minimum surfaces that result:

Up to stageCastleSurface with 5 cm marginClear height above
1 Base castle40.6 × 39.8 cmabout 51 × 50 cm35 cm
2 Keep40.6 × 39.8 cmabout 51 × 50 cm60 cm
3–4 Outer bailey and hall70 × 50 cm (BlueBrixx)about 80 × 60 cm63 cm
5 Weir walk72.2 × 71.3 cmabout 82 × 81 cm80 cm
6 Mint tower87.4 × 72.1 cmabout 97 × 82 cm80 cm
7 Gatehouse100 × 72 cmabout 110 × 82 cm80 cm

Depth is the real problem. Bookcases are usually 25 to 35 cm deep, and many sideboards and dressers about 40 cm. The base castle, at almost 40 cm deep, just fits on the latter; from the outer bailey on, at 50 cm, it does not. From stage 5 the castle is nearly square with sides over 70 cm. That leaves a sturdy table, a dedicated plinth or a board laid on top of a piece of furniture. Our guide to Lego display shelves explains how deep a shelf for large sets has to be.

Add up the height as well. On a 75 cm table the finished castle reaches about 1.5 m, eye level for an adult. That is ideal for viewing, but there can be no shelf hanging above it.

Build the castle where it is going to stay. Every expansion changes the existing castle: the outer bailey, for one, replaces the base castle's palisade, and a castle of 70 × 50 cm is not something you want to carry through the house. According to its product page, BlueBrixx does not offer a display case for Blaustein Castle. At this size, regular dusting or a dust cover of the right size does most of the work.

Short on space? Blaustein Castle in Mini Blocks

BlueBrixx Blaustein Castle Mini Blocks 110085: the base castle in a smaller format

  • Size: 27.5 × 29 × 22.5 cm
  • Pieces: 5,747 Mini Blocks
  • Expansion: so far only the keep in Mini Blocks (109124, 1,825 pieces, €49.95)
  • BlueBrixx shop price: €119.95

The Mini Blocks version recreates the base castle with slightly more pieces on about half the footprint. Mini Blocks use a 6 mm grid instead of 8 mm, so you cannot combine this castle with the standard-format expansions. With the mini keep, its listed size is 30.4 × 29.8 cm and 41 cm high. That fits on a deep shelf board where the large castle runs out of room from stage 3. There are no other mini expansions yet, so if you want the whole complex, the standard format is the only choice.

Older editions: different numbers, different figures

Blaustein Castle has been around for years, and BlueBrixx has reissued the sets several times. Since 30 June 2026 every BlueBrixx item has a new number. The previous base castle was 108712, and the first run of expansions carried numbers such as 104953 for the hall or 105236 for the weir walk. Piece counts, and in some cases sizes, of older editions differ from this table. If you want to extend a castle you already own, check the item number on your instructions before you buy an expansion.

Our own castle comes from an early edition. The base castle and the standard-brick expansions built well, with clear steps and firm clutch. Early batches did vary in brick quality, though, and a few parts were missing. The style is also a matter of taste: Blaustein follows real castles of the 11th and 12th centuries and looks plainer than Lego's playful knights' castles.

How BlueBrixx compares with Lego on bricks, instructions and compatibility is covered in BlueBrixx vs Lego. We compare more knights' castles beyond Lego in castle building brick alternatives, and you will find all the makers in our big guide to Lego alternatives.

Blaustein Castle dimensions FAQ

How big is Blaustein Castle with all expansions?

With the base castle, keep, outer bailey, hall, weir walk, mint tower and gatehouse, the castle measures 100 × 72 cm and 73.5 cm high according to BlueBrixx. With a margin, plan a surface of about 110 × 82 cm.

How tall is Blaustein Castle?

The base castle is 29.5 cm high, 55.1 cm with the keep. It reaches its final height with the weir walk: 72.9 cm by the listed size, 75 cm by BlueBrixx's description.

Does Blaustein Castle fit on a shelf?

The base castle fits on a board at least 40 cm deep, and with the keep you need about 60 cm of height in the compartment. From the outer bailey on, the castle is 50 cm deep and 70 cm wide, and a table or a sideboard with a top board is the better choice.

How many pieces does the complete Blaustein Castle have?

The sets for the seven stages up to the gatehouse have 33,977 pieces between them, or 37,587 with the Ramp Shield and Fortress Points. The finished castle holds slightly fewer, because sections are taken down as it grows.
