Top 5 Lego® Investment Sets under $100 in 2023 overview

🗓 Mon, 31 Jul 2023

You want to build a diversified Lego® investment portfolio? In this article we present five sets under $100 that are suitable for a Lego investment in 2023.

In previous articles we have already presented both our Top 5 Lego Investment Sets under $50 and our Top 5 Lego Star Wars EOL Sets 2023 in detailed investment analyses.

Our selection is exclusively sets that will go EOL (End of Life) this year and can still be purchased below the RRP. For sets that are rarely reduced or are exclusively distributed by the Danish manufacturer of terminal blocks, it is recommended to combine the purchase with the Collecting Lego VIP points and GWPs to achieve a purchase price below the MSRP.

In the following, we present our favorite EOL sets under $100 in detail.

1. Lego® 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck

Horizon Forbidden West is a popular video game that is available for the PlayStation 4 and 5. The long necks represent elementary components of the game world. In cooperation with the Danish terminal block manufacturer, Lego® 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck was released in May 2022. After a market run of about 18 months, the set is scheduled to go EOL at the end of the year.

The current POV (Part out Value) of the set is about $145, which is in good relation to the MSRP, which is $89.99.

Exclusive Horizon West license

As the set name suggests, the set has a Horizon Forbidden West license. The game is currently composed of two parts, which can be purchased separately. In the spring of this year, the third part of the game was already announced. From an investment point of view, this can be seen as positive, as further hype of the set is possible and thus the long-neck would probably also increase in value.

The set's target audience is limited exclusively to fans of the video game. This represents a risk factor. However, there have been similar collaborations in the past. In which the associated sets have turned out to be an attractive Lego®. These include, among others, the cooperation with Netflix and the series Stranger Things, in the context of which two Lego sets have been released.

The Lego Stranger Things 75810 The Other Side set, with an MSRP of $199.99, went EOL at the end of 2021 and has reached a value of around $315 as of today. This represents a percentage appreciation of 57.5% or an annual return of about 34.9%.

Game characters as exclusive minifigures

In addition to the long neck, which plays an important role in the game Horizon West, the set also includes two exclusive minifigures. These are well-known characters from the game. As of today, the two minifigures are already worth about $19, which is about 21% of the MSRP. This represents a good value.

It is unlikely that Lego® will release another set with the Horizon West license. This is also positive from an investment point of view.

On sale, the set can often be bought for less than $60, which we think is a good purchase price.

2. Lego® Star Wars 75339 Death Star Trash Compactor Diorama

The Lego® Star Wars 75339 Death Star Trash Compactor Diorama appeared in April 2022 and according to current information will go EOL at the end of the year. With an average part price of 9.3 cents, the set is moderately expensive. The POV is around $147, which is in a good relation to the MSRP of $89.99.

Diorama collection for collectors

In general, the Lego® Star Wars themed world has many fans. These include collectors, but also fans of the films who want to recreate famous scenes with the help of miniature sets from movies. The sets from the Diorama collection are ideally suited for this, so these recreate movie scenes in miniature format. Sets from the Diorama collection can be collected and built side by side

The Death Star trash compactor recreates a scene from the Star Wars movie: "A New Hope". A central element here plays the Star Wars character Han Solo, who is also included as an exclusive minifigure in this set.

In addition, there is a quote from Han Solo on the front of the set, which is particularly interesting for fans and collectors of the film. Accordingly, the set is more suitable for collectors, which is positive from an investment point of view, since collectors are often willing to pay higher prices than usual to complete their collection.

Exclusive minifigures with value appreciation potential

Also the Lego® Star Wars 75339 Death Star Trash Compactor Diorama contains exclusive minifigures. The set contains six minifigures, three of which are exclusive.

The minifigures included in the set alone already have a value of over $45, which is about 50% of the RRP. This is a very good value and makes the set particularly attractive for a Lego investment.

However, it should be noted that exclusive minifigures always represent a risk in investments. Thus, it is still possible that the Danish terminal blocks manufacturer releases the minifigures in a new set. In that case, they would no longer be exclusive and would likely decrease in value.

It's worth waiting for deals, so the set can occasionally be bought for under $70 at a good price.

3. Lego® Marvel Super Heroes 76187 Venom

Parallel to the Lego® Star Wars Helmet Collection, which is very popular with collectors, there are other helmets that are interesting for investment. One example is the Lego Marvel Super Heroes 76187 Venom Helmet, which was released in April 2021 and is expected to go EOL at the end of the year.

The helmet is interesting for a Lego investment in 2023 because it has collector potential. If only the numbers are considered, the set tends to be unsuitable for an investment. The current part out value of about $62 is below the MSRP, which is $69.99.

For this reason, it is especially important to get a good purchase price for this set. For example, the Venom helmet is regularly on sale for less than $45, which is a good discount.

Set for the motion picture

Venom is known from the action movies of the same name, in which he appears as the main protagonist. Venom is Spider Man's big brother: The target group is correspondingly large, as the Marvel films have a worldwide fan community.

The equally large sales market is important for future performance.

Collector's value for Marvel fans

As already mentioned, the set is especially interesting for fans of the Marvel movies. In recent years, similar sets have already appeared, such as the Lego® Marvel Super Heroes 76199 Carnage. This one represents the head of Spider Man, being probably the most famous protagonist of the Marvel movies.

The Venom helmet represents another set in the series. For fans of the Marvel movies, it could be interesting in the future or even at this point in time to complete the collection of Marvel helmets, thus building a small collection. For this reason, the set is particularly attractive for a Lego investment in 2023.

4. Lego® Ideas 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone

The set to the classic video game and motion picture of the same name, Lego® Ideas 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog - Green Hill Zone, was released in January 2022 and according to current information will go EOL after about two years.

The price of this set also seems high at first, with an MSRP of $79.99 and a POV of circa $108. However, it is also important to achieve a good purchase price for this set, so that it is suitable for a Lego investment.

Offers with a percentage discount of about 50% are not uncommon and represent a good purchase price.

SEGA video game classic as Lego® miniature

The Lego® Ideas set represents the SEGA video game classic Sonic the Hedgehog in miniature format. The character Sonic is also known from the Super Mario games from Nintendo and exists since 1991. Accordingly, the target audience of the set is also large. In addition to younger video game fans, there are also older fans for whom the set also provides nostalgia.

The fact that the set is primarily aimed at adults is connected with the fact that it is a set from the Ideas theme world. In this world, AFOLs (Adult Fans of Lego) submit their own set suggestions. Ultimately, an annual vote decides which sets are produced in cooperation with Lego and go on sale.

Sonic as an exclusive minifigure

As a special feature, the character Sonic, known from the video games, is included in this set as an exclusive minifigure. Since this is an Ideas set, there is a relatively small chance that the minifigure will be reissued in another set at a later date.

At the current time, the minifigure already has a value of about $10. If we refer to an offer price of $40, this already corresponds to 25% of the set price, which is a good value.

Accordingly, the set is also interesting for those who, for example sell on BrickLink

5. Lego® Star Wars 75326 Boba Fett's Throne Room

The Lego® Star Wars 75326 Boba Fett's Throne Room appeared on the market in April 2022 and will leave it again at the end of the year according to current information.

For this set, the MSRP of $99.99 tends to be poor in relation to the part out value, which is around $125. However, the exclusive minifigures are of particular importance in this set. For this reason, the set is also interesting for a Lego investment in 2023.

Mini figures interesting for collectors

As in the previous paragraph, the minifigures included in the set are interesting at the Boba Fetts Throne Room from Investmentsicht. The set contains a total of seven minifigures, six of which are exclusive and with a combined value of about $45 already account for 45% of the RRP of the set.

The set is accordingly interesting for minifigure collectors.

Star Wars movies with many followers

The films surrounding the Star Wars saga enjoy great and worldwide popularity. The target group of the set is just as large, which makes it interesting for a Lego® investment.

On sale, the set can occasionally be bought for less than $65, which in our view is a good price to buy the set as an investment. Also with this set, the risk should be noted that there is a possibility that the minifigures will reappear in another set. This would likely have a negative impact on the set's performance.
